How to Declutter Your Home

Woman in a cluttered room

With the holiday season finally over, the picture in front of you can be a lot for anyone to take in: the latest toys piling up in the corner, a state-of-the-art treadmill taking over the garage, and a new blender in the kitchen. You might be wondering, “How in the world am I going to find space for these new gadgets?” Since the new year is all about fresh starts, why not simplify your life and home by decluttering it? Cleaning up the junk taking over your home can give you peace of mind, help you save time, and give you back control over your life.

Enter 2020 with a clear mind and a clear home (of clutter) by following the easy steps from our experts at Cut N Dry Restoration:

Step 1: Create a plan

A majority of people don’t stick to their New Year’s Resolutions for many reasons. A big one is because the goal they set is simply too difficult to achieve, and they’re overwhelmed with the prospect. That is why we recommend coming up with a strategic plan to tackle the clutter. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Set goals - Before diving in headfirst, take a step back and write down what areas or rooms you need to tackle. Decide which hot spots need more attention so that you can prioritize your time properly.

  • Start small - Declutter one space at a time and start with the easiest section.

  • Establish dates - Cut out time in your calendar dedicated to the decluttering process. You should also have an attainable end date, so you can keep yourself accountable.

Step 2: Devise a sorting system

The bin method is one of the best ways to organize your home. Label them as the following:

  • Toss out - After you’ve completed clearing a space, decide which items you want to get rid of. If you have a hard time letting things go, be honest with yourself and think about the last time you used the item. Generally, if it’s been longer than six months, you should throw it out or give it to someone who has better use for it.

  • Keep - After you decide on which items you’ll keep, find a dedicated space for them.

  • Store - Seasonal items can be kept away in storage containers. You won’t need Holiday decor taking space in June.

Step 3: Clear the clutter

Now it’s time for the fun part! Here are two ideas for how to dispose of the items that are in the “toss out” bin.

  • Donate - Gently used clothes, shoes, and other household items can go towards helping those in need. Even though you might not have much of a need for the item, someone else can make better use of it!

  • Garage sale - Make a profit out of your junk! As they say, one man’s trash is another one’s treasure.
